Old fashioned Jelly Roll

I have always wanted to make a Buche de Noel for Christmas Day dessert.but .. I think I should at least try to make a plain jelly roll first.
I have fond memories of my Grandmother making a delicious jelly roll when she came to visit. She never used a recipe just made it out of her head..nor did she ever write down these wonderful items she made...... so I went on a search for a recipe and found one at Cooks . com if you want to check it out.
Mixer at work beating eggs for 5 minutes.

Cake mixture in parchment lined pan.

Rolling warm cake up in icing sugar dusted very clean tea towel.

Finished product, used sour cherry filling instead of raspberry jam, looks good.

I was happy that I could roll it up and unroll with out the cake cracking , not so happy with the cake, dry not tender, tho the flavour is good .This recipe would be good if lemon or cream filling was used , not for jelly or jam.
Any hints?

I protest!

Donny Osmond and Kym won Dancing with the Stars last night!
This is so wrong!
Mya and Dmitry should have won !
What do you think?

Back at school

Red Hats went back to school yesterday.
Our outing for November was a tour of Valley Heights Secondary school.
The new science lab

the theatre arts class
public library and the cafeteria
The school built in 1971 is set in a lovely wooded ravine area with large windows looking out into the woods. There is a newly planted butter fly garden .
The theatre arts class sang Seasons of Love from Rent , also songs from Wicked.
Terrific singers!
The food arts class cooked and served the luncheon, quiche, cannelloni, salad, home baked rolls and apple crisp. The food arts class also prepare and sell appetizers and baked goods for Christmas holiday and cater to small groups. Several of our group purchased items to take home.
The teacher for this class is one of the most devoted enthusiastic teachers I have ever met.The Grade 12 students were our tour guides.
" Nice Hats Ladies" comment from a student passing in the hall, brought a laugh to us all.
With all the bad press, secondary schools ,rowdy students and teachers get, this school was impressive for its cleanliness, eager students and dedicated teachers.
Fun to go back to school just for a day. This was a walk down memory lane for all of us .

Another Gorgeous November Day!

This has been a rainy below normal temperatures year, rare to have 2 days of sun in a row..yet November's weather has been some of the nicest this year, today sunshine, blue sky , and a high of 10C.
Itching to take advantage of this lovely day I went to, where else does a gardener go; but to a Garden center; actually 2, both filled with ideas for Christmas decor.
Some of the baubles that caught my eye.

Bright colour!

Some planters that had stars on small thin dowels to dangle above the arrangement.
Using these dowels again twig balls suspended above the greens

Unusual greens and twigs

A white, silver and glass theme.

Traditional red and green.
Who remembers the old flocked trees? This photo does not do the tree justice, the tree and flocking gorgeous.
Bright apple green!
Was fun to browse and see how the new decorating ideas.......enjoyed the sunny drive ...

Almond Cupcakes

A favourite flavour of my family is almond.. almond anything.. found a recipe in Canadian Living for these cupcakes, just had to try.
The cupcakes are rich , buttery, moist , plain yummy.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, soft
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup ground almonds
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup milk
In large bowl beat butter and sugar til fluffy. Add eggs 1 at a time. Add almond extract. In separate bowl whisk together almonds, flour, salt and baking powder. Stir into butter mixture alternate with milk, 3 dry 2 wet. Spoon into paper lined muffin cups.
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Let cool, ice.
I used a simple butter icing tinted lavender. Thought the colour goes well with almond flavour.. sprinkled with glitter sugar...
This recipe is a keeper.

Ready for Christmas?

The weather today is sensational, high of 10C. , bright sunshine, no wind.
What does that have to do with Christmas?
I have decorated the front porch for the up coming holidays:
The revamped wreath is on the front door,

Greens ready for the pots,

Pots ready for filling,

Note hydrangea shrub behind the planter!

Finished front porch , used the hydrangea in the arrangements to fill in spots.

Hopefully the front looks welcoming.
These lights are next to put on the bushes in the front garden.

What a great weather day to do these jobs!
