Can we get the new ones with the school promotion?
Nope. You can read the PDF on the apple website for details.
seems kinda sly to unload the old nanos on poor students.
You're not suggesting we should feel sorry for someone getting a FREE nano, even if it's the previous model?
While many people are looking for Apple to integrate a radio tuner into the iPod it isn't going to happen.
They already have a radio tuner add-on if you really want one. Personally, the whole point of getting an iPod is so I can avoid radio.

Games.
The vast majority of their sales are to less-technology/gadget-savvy users who have bought their Mac because of other people telling them that Macs are good, rather than the hardware, specs, or software on the computer.
In the end, it is all marketing... which is the case with most of Apple's products.
They have been selling PC hardware now for years at a higher price than their competitors.
Windows 7 isn't any worse (or better) than MacOS for browsing the web or checking email.....
so its not the OS that is influencing soccer moms and emo kids to buy Mac either.
It is the 'cool' factor, IMO
I like your 'games' point but not so sure about your other claims.
Did you mean that Windows buyers ARE more techno-savvy?
Or that Techno-Savvy types tend to avoid Macs?
Higher Prices for Better Machines.
Fantastic designs are not cheap. And Apple never skimps on Components
Quality Windows PCs cost about the Same as Macs but don't have iLife.
You think a Mom or kid wouldn't think the Mac OS is more attractive and easier to use?
You say "People telling them Macs are good" but are not clear why they do tell them that. Are Macs really good or is "All marketing"?
'Cool'
What does that mean? Is it just another word for 'Trendy'?
How did Macs get to be cool or trendy?
I always defined cool as 'being comfortable being yourself'
Finally, why does every switcher I meet have the same expression on their face. They all look relieved, like we have just pulled them into the life boat.
Cool may get you to buy something but it can't make you LOVE something.
So why do Mac users LOVE their machines so much?
If you own one I don't really have to explain.

I think what is being referenced is what used to be called "ping-pong stereo," the very wide and complete separation of channels -- which in the Beatles catalog is heard mainly on the Rubber Soul and Revolver albums, the two best they ever made IMO. I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but mess with these recordings at your peril!
I don't think either of those albums exhibit that -- the first four British albums in stereo do, but they've never been available on CD in stereo, just mono. Rubber Soul has a few songs that don't work well in headphones (eg Girl) but Revolver is mixed well!

[QUOTE=Sydde;12126014]Probably not, though, because then our tech-toy upgrade cycles would be much less regular, we would have to fix more stuff instead of replacing it, and there would simply not be enough margin to maintain the crucial upper class. So, yeah, practically speaking, we have to./QUOTE]
One wonders how Japan, the third largest economy in the world, does it?
They are just as tech-toy advanced as the United States... if not more.
And they manage to do it while spending only 0.9% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) of their GDP on defense ($46 billion) while the United States spends 4.3% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) ($663 billion).
How is China growing into the next economic superpower while only spending 2% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) of its GDP ($99 billion) on defense?
See, I think you have it backwards. You see our massive defense spending as propping up our economy. I think a closer examination will reveal that it is instead is instead, dragging us down.

Don't believe things that are obviously false just because a computers says it. A computer's processor does not run at 59 degrees F after any amount of use, except maybe if you're outside in Siberia. Even if the temperature in the room is just 59 degrees, the processor is going to generate some heat. If the normal amount of heat is very roughly about 50-60 degrees F above room temperature, then, obviously, the temperature monitor you're using is recording incorrect data. One of the worst things about computers is that they seem to be so sure of themselves!
Speaking of such things, I had a especially dull person insist that the outside temperature was about 90 degrees when it was actually about 70 because he saw it on his computer screen (we're in Minneapolis, MN, and I assume he had set his weather page to Minneapolis, Kansas). I almost got into an argument with him, but decided to let it go.

Apple should bundle the ClickToFlash plug-in into Mobile Safari. It prevents flash from running unless you really want it to run. This should address, in part, Apple's stated reason for not allowing flash (battery drain and stability) as the user would only enable it for those parts of the web that they really want to see.
And, while they are at it, they should enable file uploads in Mobile Safari to upload photos and videos.
I hate only being able to use part of the internet on my iPhone when there is no technical reason I shouldn't be able to do both Flash on demand and file uploads.
Give this man/woman/fish (*delete as applicable*) a prize. In a nutshell, this is precisely why Adobe Flash isn't available on the iPhone - Adobe have never been able to make it work under OS X. I have a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and Flash consumes approximately 120% processor time just to playback a low-resolution YouTube video. Under no circumstances would I want to bring code that requires so much resources to do so little to a mobile device. Can you imagine what this would do to your browsing experience and battery life?
I have a lot against Adobe Flash but it is a fact of life and therefore I would like access to Flash content on the iPhone but it has to be done in a way that is appropriate and, right now, I have absolutely no faith that Adobe has a solution that wouldn't destroy the user experience.

The banner is just a collection of current Apple products all the photos are available in the press section of their website. What I don't understand though is if WWDC is going to promo a load of new products why have a banner that is going to be completely out of date?
Wouldn't it be better to highlight items that will remain or just make it generic. Why not keep it hidden like previous years until the day of the conference.
Who wants to bet nothing new looking at all will be announced just new technology in the same old cases! ;)

But you are not required to upgrade OS X all the time. Hmmmm, maybe some people should start to look at Linux by now. With Ubuntu folks could get two upgrades every year, and they are 100% free :).
That's true. If you skip a OS X release, you're still fine. Skip Vista and you'll probably be a decade behind at some point. But it's almost a given to purchase OS upgrades whenever given (as long as some major features are given) because your entire working environment is in the OS. Anyways, I think it's just important to view a Vista purchase as being the equivalent of at least two OS X releases, so saying that Vista is $239 and OS X is $129 - and thus, that Vista is more expensive - is not completely true.
I'm afraid to touch Linux :( I don't even know what it looks like, how it works, or what runs on it.

^ Uhm. Popularity does not imply quality.
Neither does obscurity. However, success in the music industry is generally measured by how many people like a musician's work. Ask any musician whether they'd rather create music that appeals to 4 people, or 40,000,000 people. Your individual lack of appreciation of The Beatles doesn't diminish their success, collectively and individually. To discount their accomplishments and influence is to display monumental naivet.
+1
The Beatles have stood the test of time, which is my personal measure of artistic success.
I wonder if anyone payed 1.29 for revolution number nine.
laughed so hard when I read this XD

...and 64 bit, and better SIMD processing etc. Recent MacWorld benchmarks show the same clockspeed C2D 28% faster than the CD in iTunes encoding. That sold it to me.
Agreed. That would have been with a bigger cache though. Is there much of a speed bump for the 1.83?

A little more from the La Monde Diplomatique article (http://mondediplo.com/2008/02/05military) ...
Higher spending, fewer jobs
On 1 May the Center for Economic and Policy Research of Washington, DC, released a study prepared by the economic and political forecasting company Global Insight on the long-term economic impact of increased military spending. Guided by economist Dean Baker, this research showed that, after an initial demand stimulus, by about the sixth year the effect of increased military spending turns negative. The US economy has had to cope with growing defence spending for more than 60 years. Baker found that, after 10 years of higher defence spending, there would be 464,000 fewer jobs than in a scenario that involved lower defence spending.
Baker concluded: “It is often believed that wars and military spending increases are good for the economy. In fact, most economic models show that military spending diverts resources from productive uses, such as consumption and investment, and ultimately slows economic growth and reduces employment”.

A child does not naturally grow up to be socially responsible or kind. They naturally grow up to be self-centered and violent unless a parent or authority teaches them otherwise.
As negative as I think religion can be, it has set a code of conduct for people that enables cooperation and empathy for others.
Sorry, that is utter crap. My best friend in grade school was raised completely without religion, and he is the nicest person in the world. Meanwhile, there are copious and abundant examples of self-centered, amoral, greedy bastards preaching jesus to the masses: if religion cannot help them, what value is it?
